Our mission
Kaleidoscope Desert exists to rescue animals that have run out of options, give them a safe and free life for as long as they live, and share that life with people through art and visits, so that every visitor leaves knowing the animals as individuals.
What we do
Animal rescue and rehoming
We take in animals from across San Bernardino County that need a safe place to land. In five years we have helped rescue and rehome more than 500 animals. Some find new families through our foster and adoption program, and the rest stay with us for life.
Lifetime sanctuary care
More than a hundred animals live here today, among them a zebra, emus, an ostrich, miniature horses, miniature donkeys and a miniature cow, goats, pigs, a sulcata tortoise, geese, turkeys, peacocks, parrots and our big white rescue dogs. They roam free across the land rather than living in pens. Every day of their care, from hay and feed to hoof trims and vet visits, is paid for by the sanctuary.
An outdoor art museum
The grounds are an open-air collection of sculpture, murals and installations by local, resident and visiting artists, from New York to Cape Town to San Diego. The anchor piece is the Gamelatron Tangan Ke Hati by Aaron Taylor Kuffner, fifteen bronze gongs played by robotic mallets. We keep adding to the collection, so the sanctuary is never finished.
Education and public visits
Guided tours introduce adult visitors to the animals one by one: how each one came to us, what they need, and how to be around them. Our free articles on the animals and the high desert are written for anyone planning a trip or curious about the residents. Visits are for adults 18 and over.
Our impact
More than 500 animals rescued and rehomed in five years. More than 100 animals in lifetime care today, of fifteen species. A growing collection of outdoor art, open to the public through guided visits.
Where the money goes
We are funded by donations, our Fairy Godparent sponsors, visit tickets and a small shop. Every dollar goes to the animals and the sanctuary they live in: feed and hay, veterinary care, shelter, water, and the next rescue. Visits and the shop are part of our charitable and educational mission, never a separate business.
Give directly with a one-time gift, or become a Fairy Godparent of one resident. Donations are tax-deductible as the law allows.
